What is AEO? Answer-engine optimization, explained for business owners

Answer-engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring your business information so AI engines — ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, and Google AI Overviews — describe your business accurately and cite it when people ask relevant questions. It matters because a growing share of buying research now ends inside an AI answer, without a click to any website.
Traditional SEO optimized for a results page. AEO optimizes for an answer. The difference changes what you should publish and how you should structure it.
What AI engines actually read
AI engines synthesize answers from sources they can parse cleanly: pages with direct opening statements, explicit question-and-answer sections, consistent business details across directories, and structured data (schema markup) that removes ambiguity.
If your hours differ between your website and your Google listing, or your services are described three different ways across directories, an AI engine will either pick one version — possibly the wrong one — or hedge. Consistency is the first ranking factor of the answer era.
Five moves to make this quarter
One: open every important page with a direct answer to the question the page exists for — the first two sentences, not the fifth paragraph. Two: add a real FAQ section with schema markup to your product and service pages. Three: audit every directory listing for consistency in name, address, hours, and service descriptions. Four: ask the major AI engines what they say about your business today, and note every error. Five: fix the sources those errors come from — usually stale listings and abandoned profiles.
None of this replaces traditional SEO. It compounds on top of it: the same clean structure that wins featured snippets also wins AI citations.
Where this is going
Answer engines are becoming the front door of business discovery.
